Chapter 11: Hot Spies

Vincent and Nikoloz finished writing up their reports. Boone and Ernie released them with the usual warning not to leave town suddenly.

“I ain’t sure,” Boone said, “whether it’s going to go to trial or not. This might just be the straw that breaks Judge Franklin’s back. He may decide to throw the book at Donnie this time.”

“We can hope so,” Vincent muttered as they returned to their cars. “Somebody needs to rein that idiot in.”

They drove back to the house and crept through the humid darkness of the yard. The lights were still on downstairs, so Vincent knocked quietly on the back door. Dr. Yarborough pulled it open, rubbing his eyes and holding a cup of coffee.

“I finally got Billy to sack out on the sofa,” he said softly. “He was determined to wait up for you two. Margaret had the sense to go back up to bed.”

He led the way to the kitchen, where he closed the door behind them. “There is no question now. If they sent those men after us, they’re no longer interested in negotiating with me.”

“No,” Nikoloz said, pouring himself a cup of coffee. “They know you have come to us.”

Dr. Yarborough dropped heavily into a chair. “I would like to take my work to your office in Atlanta, if I could. Will you stay and help the children pack? It shouldn’t take me more than a day, perhaps a day and a half, to set everything up.”

“Take what time you need,” Vincent said. “The children will be safe until you get back.”

“Jones could stay in place of Rogers,” Nikoloz suggested.

“Did I hear my name?” The back door opened to admit the big man. Nikoloz explained the doctor’s plans, and Jones agreed readily. “You can’t watch round the clock with just two people.”

“Evans and Rogers ought to be back fairly soon,” Vincent mused. “Rogers will have to return home, of course, but Evans and Sanders could accompany Dr. Yarborough to Atlanta.”

“Leaving us three to mind the offspring.” Jones grinned. He helped himself to a cup of coffee and a seat at the kitchen table. “I was about ready to use up a sleep dart on the kid. Thought he’d never shut his eyes.”

Nikoloz heard a telltale crackle from the vent overhead. Should he mention it? Perhaps he would see just how alert his fellow agents were. “I am certain that the children will be able to help us pack whatever essentials you desire. If you could make a list….”

Dr. Yarborough rubbed his forehead. “I’m not going to get any sleep tonight, am I? I’ll start on that first, I suppose.”

“We will pack all of the suitcases as if you were merely going for a long visit.” Nikoloz “You should leave out a few clothes as well as any other items from your room that you wish to take.”

“And you’ll have a team watching the house until you can pack the rest up?”

Vincent nodded. “Evans and Sanders can set that up once you’re in Atlanta.
